3 Simple Steps to Get a Job You Love, No Matter how Old You Are

In all the years I have been working with mid-life transition clients I am still amazed at how many believe they are too old to try something different.

Nothing can be further from the truth. It breaks my heart to see someone shackled to the limiting belief that they just have to suffer with  a job they cannot stand. It doesn’t have to happen this way!

Every day is a turning point. If you want to live life your way (and I know you do!), these three steps will get you moving in the right direction.

1.  Assess. Take stock of who you are, what you want, and what you have to offer. Write it all down. As you determine the criteria that would make work a better situation for you, consider your areas of greatest interest. What are you most passionate about? Take into account the things you are really good at… so good that you hardly even have to think about it.  Think about your past achievements. What kind of problems do you love to solve?

2.  Research. Dig around, do some research into the marketplace. Find out what companies and industries are involved in things that you care about. Learn what those companies are trying to achieve and how they’re going about it. What are their products and services, who do they serve and what kind of challenges are they facing?

3.  Communicate. Take action to connect with people who are involved in things that you are deeply interested in. Express your interest and curiosity in what they are striving for and what problems they need to solve. Listen carefully for their business challenges and consider how you may be able to help resolve some of them. Tell them about some of your experiences and strengths relating to their needs.

“I am who I am, from my past. But I will be whom I want to be from the creation of my future, which is in my hands.“   – Malka Ghuman

Your future is in your hands. You have the power to make a positive change in your life, no matter how old you are.

What kind of contribution do you intend to make next?

When will you begin?

Design Your Ideal Life: Four Hidden Truths About Why We Work

Have you ever asked yourself why you work? It’s a question worth pondering. Of course, an obvious reason is that it provides necessary income to pay for the necessities AND for the fun you like to have. There are many factors to consider when determining what you want to work on, how, when and where. How would it feel to know four hidden truths that can help to simplify your decision-making?

Work for peace. Working in the right job or on the right project for you will give you a sense of peace. When your work makes a positive impact on the lives of others, you get peace of mind. There are innumerable ways to work in peace or for peace, whether in the home, the community, religious groups, small companies, corporations, international groups or government.

Work for love. Every human being has a basic need for love. In my opinion, that need can, at least in part, be fulfilled by loving what we do. When you love the work you do, it doesn’t seem like work at all. You are highly motivated to do it well, and in doing so you gain self-respect and the respect of others. Isn’t respect a form of love?

Work for happiness. Fitting work in a pleasant work environment will certainly contribute to your well-being. Yet, happiness is an inside job and it is always a choice.  In other words, it comes from within, not from without. Nonetheless, working on tasks and in situations that are harmonious with your lifestyle will certainly contribute to your happiness level.

Work for freedom. When you engage in work that is appropriate to your needs and desires you gain a sense of freedom. The right work provides you with the freedom of self-expression through writing, speaking, art, music, dance and more. Some work situations also provide opportunities to express your beliefs or to support a cause that’s important to you. Work can also provide you with an income which you can freely use to support your own needs and interests and to help others.

One of the most important keys in attaining the life of your dreams is to discover your motivators. If your ideal future includes work, consider this.  No matter what type of work you are looking for, full-time, part-time, paid or unpaid, you want to ensure that it is in alignment with who you are and how you want to live.

Peace, love, happiness and freedom are just a few of the things to take into consideration as you uncover the buried treasures (a.k.a. work opportunities). You will now be better equipped to make the best work choices for your ideal future.

3 Crucial Things You Must Know To Woo the Right Employers

There are three things you must know in order to avoid the biggest mistake repeatedly made by job seekers. That big mistake is what I call the ‘spray and pray’ strategy.  Typically the job seeker pulls together a resume as quickly as possible and fires it off in a panic to as many different companies as possible to get their name out there in hope that they will be noticed and hired. The cover letter, if there is one, may be impersonally addressed to ‘Dear Sir or Madam’ or to ‘whom it may concern’.

Put yourself in the shoes of the recipient for a moment. As an executive or manager, you have a wide range of responsibilities and are juggling many balls in the air. A new and unsolicited resume comes across your desk. You don’t have an opening that needs to be filled right now and you have never heard of this person. How much time and attention will you give this resume? At best, you may file it or forward the resume on to the HR department. At worst, you may shred it.

There are three crucial things that you, the Job seeker, must know if you want to get interviews that will ultimately lead to job opportunities that will be a great fit.
1. Who am I?
Pause, breathe and take the time to assess who you are. Take stock by writing down your areas of expertise and your greatest interests, your sense of purpose, and your values. Identify your top three skills that you would most like to use in your next job. You are not the same person today that you were 10 years ago, or five years ago, or even yesterday.

2. Who is in my target market?
Consider what kind of contribution you want to make. What’s important to you? In what marketplaces are companies and organizations working on causes, services or products that are important to you? Begin to research in your areas of interest. Find out who they are, what they do, and one of their greatest challenges.

3. How can I help?
Now you are ready to determine how you can help. With some networking research, you can discover how your knowledge, experiences and abilities can help your targeted companies overcome the challenges they face. You can learn about work environments, company values, mission and vision and how they operate.

Be sure to follow these crucial steps and you will be well positioned with the information you need to effectively woo your target companies, opening new doors that you may have never thought possible.
